Students Reassured at the "GM"

(above) President Padmore adressing students and fellow councillors at the General Meeting.
Reassurance was the word the modest gathering of students received from Guild President Carl Padmore and his twenty strong contingent at Last Thursday's General Meeting.Padmore now in his second year of office, was backed by his full compliment of council members and seemed to be on top of most of the major issues. He urged the student body to "keep us (the Guild council) on our toes"during his welcome, question and answer segment, as well as closing remarks.

The highly anticipated Treasurer's report was relatively well received with students calling mainly for the document to be published so they could have a better grasp of the figures within.
Students raised perrenial issues such as,better bus service, the price of books and the lack of oportunities for part-time students to take part in extra-curricular activities, for all of which, solutions were suggested.
The meeting was keep under firm control by Public Relations Officer Danny Babb also in his second term and Secretary Heidi Badenock working in tandem.
The two ensured the meeting followed the agenda and ran smoothly, the "bashment" of previous general meetings, seemingly a thing of the past.

Other speakers on the night included Vice-President Odwin Trenton with the Inter-Clubs Committee report,Social Sciences reprsentative Damian "Figgy"Belgrave, delivering on behalf of the five faculties,The Post Graduate Representative, who said litlle owing to the abscence of post graduates in the audience and Games Committee Chairperson Akil Dowridge who spoke of the upcoming Inter Campus Games.

The meeting was held on September 30th in the Lecture Theatre 1 of the Roy Marshall Complex and lasted just under three hours.

Postponed for a week due to persistent showers, the rockers, rappers and rythm poets would not be denied their spot in the lime-light as Woodstock came to Cave Hill last Wednesday night.A late start resulted in an intimate gathering of students and followers of the local "live music" scene huddled together on the guild lawn with eyes and ears directed toward the action onstage.
First of the bands onstage was "Standing Penance" performing a number of covers mingled with originals including the crowd pleasing "Chop Suey" and Drowning Pool's "Let the bodies hit the Floor."The other band's onstage were the up and coming, rock-oriented "Vacant Head Space" and the more mature "Psilos" with their funkier, jazzier sound. The poetry/open mic segment included offerings by Geeva, with a deep piece entitled "Path to sunrise" among others. Backed by DJ's and the Azband were local free-style rappers Sun Rok and Rhyme Minister who performed some of their more familiar songs.A t the end of the night though one would have to say that rock music reigned supreme on Woodstock Wednesday!!

Record numbers of students gathered on the Guild Lawn for the Fresher's fun day hosted by the NACC.Whether it was rock-climbing,riding the mechanical bull or speeding through the obstacle course, a good time was had by freshers and continuing students alike.A particular crowd favourite was Sumo Wrestling. This challenge saw two opponents strapped into large suits with helmets for protection try to push each other off of the mat.Improvisation however proved to be the name of the day with pro-wrestling -like maneuvers being exhibited by the more spirited competitors.Large numbers of students spectated and partook of the challenges on offer until well after the sun had set on the "funnest" day for the semester.

The council of the Guild of Students was present for the matriculation ceremony of the new students which took place on Friday September 3rd in the Roy Marshall Campus. The Ceremony which recquired students to dress semi-formally allowed them the chance to see thier Deans and other officials dressed in their official regalia including the councilors of the Guild of Students who were robed in the red of undergraduates. In attendance were top officials such as Vice Chancellor of the University of The West Indies Dr.E.Nigel Harris, Principal ag. Cave Hill Dr.Eudene.Barritteau,Chief of Security Oral Reid,Campus Registar Jacqueline Wade,Bursar Lisa Alleyne,Alumni Association President Ricardo Knight Deans and others officially introduced the newly enrolled students to the Univeristy of The West Indies Cave Hill Campus.

The featured speaker, the previous year's valedictorian from the faculty of law, Renee Gayle motivated the new students to expend themselves and never settle for mediocrity.
Entertainment for the event featured the vocals of Guild Vice-President Odwin"Don Trent"Trenton as well as those of the ever-impressive Cavite chorale.

The official event was followed by a cocktail reception which was held in the car park adjacent to the Roy Marshall Complex. New students were given the opportunity to mingle with each other, councillors of their Guild and university administration over drinks and light refreshments.

Orientation

(left)The Guild Lawn was transformed into a picture of colour and excitment at last Friday's Orientation fair. Well done Andrea!!
The Office of Student Services of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus must be commended for a job well done for their orientation fair which was held campus-wide on Friday August 27th 2010.New Students assembled in the three lecture theatres of the Roy Marshall Campus where they were introduced to University officials and members of the Council of the Guild of Students. The Clico Centre on the hill overlooking The Roy Marshall Complex was also hosting new students who watched the proceedings via closed circuit television.

Under the theme "Start Today, Reach Inside. Value Execellence," (S.T.R.I.V.E.) freshers were encouraged to strive for excellence in life and during their time on campus. The Guild Council also played its role in the presentations.Notably, the president Mr.Carl Padmore performing the MC duties. The P.R.O Mr.Danny Babb also took part, in a comedic skit with Humanities and Education student Shakera Maynard which warned students of graduating from the stop lights,to the benches by the trees and earning degrees in "liming."That well recieved perfomance was followed up soon after by the Vice President Odwin "Don Trent" Trenton belting out the Red Plastic Bag penned "Strive for Execellence".

After the presentation students were given guided tours of the campus by student volunteers from Student Services. The Guild Lawn was the scene of the culmination of the Orientation fair with a number of businesses diplaying their goods and services being well patronised by the students on hand.Energy Vbyz kept things jamming by playing a slew of regional, national and international hits while Mr.Padmore continued to keep the energy high by hosting impromptu competitions and giveaways.Next year we look forward to another quality production from the Office of Student services working in concert with the council of the Guild of Students.

Good Ole' Cave Hill Hospitality!

(above )
The Guild Vice president Odwin "Don Trent" Trenton gives an international student a "piece" of Cave Hill in the form of a band as the President and other members of the guild look on.

During the summer the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus played host to students from Eastern Illinois University .With some students staying on Sherlock Hall and the others on Frank Worrell Hall, they even engaged in a friendly rivalry reminiscent of that enjoyed by the "regulars" of the halls.

The Council of the Guild of students did their part to make sure these students got a taste of the social life at Cave Hill shortly before they returned to their homes. After a short session where the students were introduced to the Guild council, they spoke about their time on campus. They were also given Cave Hill memorabilia as they pledged to be ambassadors for our campus on the hill before the boogieing to calypsos and dance hall tunes while socializing in the guild.

Guild builds leadership skills

(left to right) The Vice President (Odwin Trenton) and P.R.O(Danny Babb) of the Guild of Students @ U.W.I Cave Hill are all smiles at the Grantley Adams international Airport as they return from a leadership conference in the U.S Virgin Islands.

The Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders was held in St.Thomas,United States Virgin Islands at the University of the Virgin Islands from May 16th-June 3rd,2010.The institute focused this year on managing natural disasters as a global leader.

This year the Vice-President of the Guild of Students,Odwin Trenton and the Public Relations Officer,Danny Babb represented the Cave Hill Campus at the annual event.
While there, they along with approximately 40 other students learnt the basics of some seven (7) foreign languages including Nepali, Spanish, French, Arabic, Japanese,Chinese and Haitian creole.
additionally, they were exposed to sign language, which they have described as a wonderful asset to a leader.

Furthermore, the two were also involved in many activities which saw them visiting many places and persons of interest across St.Thomas during their two week stay. One such person was current Governor of the USVI John Dejongh, who enlightened them about leadership skills and how they have assisted him during his term in office. They also visited VITEMA,Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency, which is an integral part of the life within the Virgin Islands.

However an important part of the trip was the opportunity to work alongside seven young Haitians who recounted the story of the earthquake which devastated their country in January of this year and their efforts to rebuild since then.
In addition ,being able to meet other students form across the globe, was also a highlight of the trip which gave them a greater appreciation for the world as a global village.

Finally, the pair were asked to prepare a Leadership Prospectus for their lives over the next 25-30 years, and did so successfully and have begun following this prospectus to achieve their goals and aspirations. The Leadership skills learned will be shared with their colleagues on the Guild Council and by extension the student body.
