The Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders was held in St.Thomas,United States Virgin Islands at the University of the Virgin Islands from May 16th-June 3rd,2010.The institute focused this year on managing natural disasters as a global leader.
This year the Vice-President of the Guild of Students,Odwin Trenton and the Public Relations Officer,Danny Babb represented the Cave Hill Campus at the annual event.
While there, they along with approximately 40 other students learnt the basics of some seven (7) foreign languages including Nepali, Spanish, French, Arabic, Japanese,Chinese and Haitian creole.
additionally, they were exposed to sign language, which they have described as a wonderful asset to a leader.
Furthermore, the two were also involved in many activities which saw them visiting many places and persons of interest across St.Thomas during their two week stay. One such person was current Governor of the USVI John Dejongh, who enlightened them about leadership skills and how they have assisted him during his term in office. They also visited VITEMA,Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency, which is an integral part of the life within the Virgin Islands.
However an important part of the trip was the opportunity to work alongside seven young Haitians who recounted the story of the earthquake which devastated their country in January of this year and their efforts to rebuild since then.
In addition ,being able to meet other students form across the globe, was also a highlight of the trip which gave them a greater appreciation for the world as a global village.
Finally, the pair were asked to prepare a Leadership Prospectus for their lives over the next 25-30 years, and did so successfully and have begun following this prospectus to achieve their goals and aspirations. The Leadership skills learned will be shared with their colleagues on the Guild Council and by extension the student body.
