(left) Office of student Service personnel out in force and enjoying themselves too.
So, neither where you brightly clad in your costume blowing your whistle with cup in hand enjoying the madness nor where your perched at one of the various vantage points that lined the route from Spring Garden highway to Cave Hill, but you would still like to know what went down? Guildchill was there and simply put everything went down.Down to the ground again, again and again...the revelers never tired along the route with only three minor incidents where medical attention was necessary being reported. The drinks went down with the drinks trucks returning to campus with empty cases and their unemployed bartenders their only cargo.

An estimated 1900 revelers from the thirteen bands on the road also returned to campus with mile-wide smiles on their faces and went down until the music trucks played their last tune. The Saturday March 26 jump organised by the National Affairs Comimttee headed by R.Ziggy Marshall got started just after 3.00 p.m in the car park adjacent to Weisers on the bay and headed south toward Bridgetown along Spring Garden before turning by Mount Gay and following the highway back to campus.Under the watchful eyes of the Royal Barbdaos Police Force and private security the revelers made their way up the street jamming to the "hypest" soca and ocassional dancehall tunes accompanied by three music trucks. Some onlookers opted to join the fun and chipping to the sides of the ropes containing those registered with the bands. It being carnival though, revelers spilled out of their designated areas onto the side of the streets as bands inter-mingled freely with each other. This may have created problems for the judges headed by Merle Niles including Kevin Carvalho and Anya Lorde (in for the ill Trevor Marshall). The results then, reflected the organisation of the bands as they made their way pass the judging points at S.B.I on the highway and opposite Royal Bank at the bottom of the hill. Unoffical results place Frontline,Bacchanalia and Stag Roots Army in favourable positions but the official decision will be made public when the N.A.C.C holds The Carnival Awards postponed from yesterday until further notice. When all was said an done all had had an enjoyable time of fun in the sun! Don't take my word for it though, the pictures tell the story that much better!

Who to jump with for Carnival Final part.

(above) Frontline will be one of the biggest bands on the road.
(below) Bacchanalia will be bring bacchanal to carnival!

If you haven't decided who to jump with for U.W.I Carnival 2011 your'e probably going to be taking part in the jump-up for 2012 or spectating today. However we mention some of the other bands who will be parading the streets and you can look out for them as they become part of the grand kalidescope of colour that passes you by.Fete-ish is TTSA's effort of bringing "carnival" to U.W.I Carnival.Trini and Grenadian forces combine to present Bacchanalia, an outfit complete with headress and all of the other elements of the big stage.Look out for Asylum and get out of their way if possible, as they have been confined to their respective halls, Frank Worrell and Sherlock since last year's jump and are mad for some action. Island Roots is "fancying" carnival this year with their Lady and Mr.President themed band this year and will be one of the largest on the road.Speakin of large keep your eyes open for Frontline who are carrying approximately 300 or more to the greatest street parade for the year with their stamp of approval.Last but not least the jab jab posse are but the traditional devil character to play mas.No stop reading this and make your way to Spring Garden highway!

U.W.I Splash

1.Raxx thoroughly enjoyed themsleves! 2.Spectacular Night, spectucalar photo! 3.SokaKartelChilling backstage after their set ! 4.Water was everywhere!

If You missed "under de standpipe" you have only yourself to blame!I told you so! Just saying...Well truthfully there is not much that can be said of U.W.I Cave Hill''s first attempt at a wet fete in recent memory besides next year it will be bigger and better and wetter!(corny but true.)Location was Cricket Legends on Fontabelle notable guest performers included Edwin Yearwood and The Soca Kartel.Remember a picture is worth 1000 words so here is about 4000.

Liming,Beer,Island Roots

(below) A perfect replica of my vision, not a camera effect...
The action was definitely with Island Roots last Friday as they hosted the last beer lime before U.W.I Carnival week 2011 begins in earnestnext week titled "Jump Off!" That we did as we were treated to a mix of soca and dancehall tunes on the night with the former enjoying heavier rotation likely attributable to the Carnival fever which permeated the atmosphere. While there is so much more that we could mention,we were having such a blast that this was all we could report with any certainty. If in doubt you can ask me or view the accompanying photo.

Re:Carnival Sports!

(left&above) A large crowd takes in the N.A.C.C Carnival Sports "Bring Back de Drums !"

U.W.I Carnival 2011 launched with a bang as Carnival Sports came off on the U.W.I Hockey Astro turf last night. Starting around 9:30 p.m and ending some three hours later, the large crowd which had been on hand for U.W.I 7's World Cup stayed on and got even larger as the night went on. Highlight events of the night included the "drinks" relays and the hard fought Tug-O-war contests. The team representing Frontline emerged victorious in the latter event while a group from fleet-fotted young men from Social Sciences took the honours at stake in the realy. Both teams were treated to a botttle of the now wildy popular Tommy Bahama rum for their efforts. Then to the main event, the moment all had been waiting for...You guessed it "WUK-UP OLYMPICS" and they did not disappoint!Despit a lack of participants the large and vocal gathering was treated to some acrobatic displays and sensational gyrations. When all was said and done however,it was the competitor from Bacchanalia who made the BIGGEST impact winning the band $300 in prizes compliments the N.A.C.C.words cannot desribe her performance hence the video clip(below). The show flowed nicey thanks the vocal & musical wizadry of Kerry 'The Wizard' Brathwaite working in concert with Energy Vybz who kept the crowd entertained. The "Tuk-band" however would have to be declared winners in the informal clash between themselves and the DJs, as anyone in earshot could attest.Complete with drums and brass the approximately 5-6 person ensemble played everything from 'Sports Day' standards "Foward, foward, back",to old soca hits like "Short Pants" and even modern day dancehall hits like "Pat & Crank." Each time the band tuned up, groups and individuals alike, broke into spontaneous singing and gyrating harkening back to their days at Interschool sports which goes into its final leg at the National Stadium today. If the hype of last night's event is anything to go by Cave Hill's U.W.I Carnival 2011 could be one of the best in recent memory. Kudos thus far to the N.A.C.C and his team.Stay tuned for more Carnival events and make sure U go out and WI enjoy our carnival!

Who to jump with for Carnival? Pt.5

(above&left) Intelligence for potential operatives of The Stag Roots Army_
The "most energy on the road" for U.W.I Carnival 2011 will be coming from The Stag Roots Army. That is according to bandleader Katrina Gittens better known as "Kat".Guys and girls can jump in two sections militarily themed "militia" and "commandos" at $80.The ladies will look hot in their choice of body paint while the men cool things down with complimentary "super-soakers!"With title sponsorship by Stag Beer, drinks on the road and an after jump meal will also be served as part of the package as well as the standard free entry to the Carnival after-party.
The Roots, a relatively newly formed social group which had been spreading on campus long before its official formation, wanted to jump together on carnival day and invite others to join the fun.Instrumental in recruitng The Stag Roots Army and preparing for the battle that will be Carnival are Kerry"The Wizard" Brathwaite of Technical , Ryan"Menace" Davis of Monstapiece fame, Chad Bynoe, Myron Edwards and Tazio Riley just to name a few.The costumes are the result of input of various Roots family members all compiled and interpreted by graphics man Damar Evelyn into your new party uniform. There must be something about being dressed in uniform, that's because latest reports reveal The Army has almost reached full capacity! And if as they say "Jump wid de Roots Army or don't jump at all!"Make sure you get your gear A.S.A.P to make sure you are not M.I.A for Carnival 2011!

He's Back

(left) From one President to another,Guild President Padmore shares a word with President Forte of Cave
Hill Association of Post Graduate Students. (CHAPS)

He is back!Guild President Carl "Alff" Padmore is back on duty but he is not 100%.An absence from campus led to all kinds of incredulous rumours as to his whereabouts.Among the most sensational pieces of gossip surrounding the President's M.I.A status was one where he was allegedly arrested and remanded to H.M.S Dodds Maximum Security Prison. This supposedly came as a result of ongoing Police investigations. This and other rumours proved to be untrue as GuildChill had a chance to sit and chat with the outgoing Guild President at his Sherlock Hall residence last week.

(left)Some of the medications which Carl Padmore is forced to take on a day to day basis.

Mr.Padmore was then preparing to attend his final University Meeting but took the time out from preparing is final remarks as Guild President to address rumours that have been going around and let students know he is okay.
Padmore last represented Cave Hill students at University Meetings at Mona Campus in Jamaica in early February. It was here, while staying at the Mona Visitor's Lounge that he had an embarassing slip while in the shower.Unfortunately Padmore saw the fall as just that and did not seek medical advice, continuing with his normal daily routine. The following day the pain worsened forcing him to seek medical attention at the Mona Campus Clinic where he was given an injection and sent on to The University Hospital of the West Indies Mona for further examination. X-Ray's revealed severe soft tissue damge for which several medications, including an array of painkillers, were prescribed. On his return to Barbados Padmore continued the course of treatment and the pain subsided. However the day before the Guild Annual General Meeting, Padmore experienced a severe back spasm which saw family members rush him to The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. There he recieved treatment, further medication and was sent to therapy which continues up until present day.Despite being on sick-leave from his day job and his sometimes painful condition Padmore attended his final University meeting on Friday where Student Enrolment among other issues was on the agenda.

Who to jump with for Carnival? Pt. 3

(left) "LOSO Promo" material.
They are as they put it, "the realist group on campus",They are LOSO,living by the motto "let off or step off" and pledging to "keep it real or keep it moving" and this year they are doing both. Jamon White, Mario Baker, Collis Worrell and Rico"Chico Rico"Worrell the founders of LOSO are moving students down the road while keeping it very real! As a matter of fact they are doing it "LOUD." That's the name of the recently formed group's first attempt at a Carnival band.

Why "LOUD?"LOSO says we are tired of repitition and seeing the same costumes every year.So with the help of Janine White and Anthrax designs they came up with some exciting new outfits taking it to another level and leaving "time wasters" below.$80 gets the ladies into a baby tee and shorts in one of three sections suggestively titled "S&M," "Cheers" and "Fading".$5 more gets the more outgoing lady into a bikini costume in any of the three mentioned sections. At $65 and with the three female sections men will be grabbing at the chance to be one of the "LOSO Kings" the band's only male section. Across the four sections of the band LOSO hopes to cater for between 150-200 people.

So why jump with LOSO? Not only are they catering for all shapes, sizes and circles but they are the real band of the people and not just a group but a family.Ultimately they are offering the total Carnival experience encouraging their revelers to:"be seen, be heard,be fancy,be LOUD!"

It's Debatable!

(below) Jones on his way to igniting an explosive controversy while Trenton (partially hidden) left and Quashie (right) sit unexpectantly.

A night on which eloquence of speech and creative ideas to tackle perennial problems saw all three Lecture Theatres of the Roy Marshall Complex filled with optimistic students, ultimately ended in controversy. After a promising start had been made by the uncontested candidates Jimesha Prince (Secretary) and Cristopher St.Hill (Medical Sciences Rep.), keen debate for faculty representative positions ensued. Humanities excited the crowd with spirited presentations by their candidates Donnya D. Piggott,Christina Katrina Smith and Joel Barrow. The battle continued into their question and answer segment with the ladies seemingly to be on top.In our opinion Humanities and Education Rep. will be a close race.
Pure&Applied represented by Mikhael Dulal Sealy, Abigayle Sealy& Azonya Giselle Vanloo and Law with Donia Fuller &Johanna Daniel were well presented, however they did not match the level of interest caused by Social Sciences. Social Sciences hopeful Ahsa De Suza was perhaps the most impactful presenter of the night, instantly commanding the attention of the audience. Her booming voice, posture and dramatic hand gestures leads one to easily envision her on campaign trails for years to come.Mario"Babbit"Carter responded well in recapturing listeners after De Suza's dynamic presentation and while Reymonson Seale made a good effort, at the debates "So Sci "was essentially a two horse race.
The lone Union Committee candidate Greg Scott was absent with excuse however, the other committee chair debates where closely fought affairs. Both Aurelia Bruce and Justin"Smoove"Luke gave good accounts of themselves while there is no clear choice for G.C.C between the incumbent Akil Dowridge,Damien Fanus and Marcus Green who illicited crowd response via distribution of green pieces cloth to the audience during his speech. Janique-Ka John was the self-proclaimed "clear choice" for P.C.C incorporating a slide show into her presentation, the only candidate to do so, while the incumbent Andre Layne encouraged voters to "Make the right choice."
(above)Students & candidates look on keenly from a packed LT2.
Emerging from the somewhat low-key Vice Presidential debates as favourite ,would have to be the ever-popular Damien "Figgy"Belgrave over perennial guild election candidate Ryan Dalrymple.
Then it had been the moment all had been waiting for but it was at that moment that all went awry.Quincy Jones allegedly asked to speak first, breaking the established protocol of first name alphabetical order of the proceedings up to that point. It was all part of a diabolical plot by Jones who abused his opportunity to speak on the platform to lambaste his fellow candidates before announcing his withdrawal from the Presidential race.Bearing the brunt of Jones venom, was current Vice-President Odwin "Don Trent" Trenton.Such criticisms led Jones to endorse Kenrick Quashie before leaving the stage shortly after after being cautioned by the Returning Officer Kezron Walters, who encouraged him not to engage in "character assasination."Quashie was next to the platfrom and began by saying his notes where no longer neccessary as he would speak from his heart, much to the jubilation of his supporters all clad in red matching the tie and waiscoat under his black suit. The odds seemingly stacked against him, Trenton was pensive before taking to the podium. With the help of vocal support scattered across the now considerably emptier LT's some time after 12.am, the incumbent VP negotiated his way through the quagmire prepared by Jones and emerged as a legitamate challenger to the "debate crowd" favoured Quashie. In a lengthy and sometimes chaotic question and answer, both candidates handled themselves relatively well though some may have felt their queries went unanswered.
With the debates fading into history, several candidates enquired of the R.O Walters into the presentation of Quincy Jones given its content and his conduct and what action
if any, can be taken before or after the ballots are counted in today's March 9 Election Day.
The night tossed up many questions, some genuinely addressed, others neatly brushed aside, but the biggest unanswered question at the end of the night for us :"Is Quincy Jones still a presedential candidate in the 2011 Guild General Election." Mr. R.O the floor is open for answers.

Law week 2011

(left)Exhibit A-evidence of the exciting events held during Law Week 2011.
Law week 2011 ran from February 27 to March 5 or rather into the wee hours of March 6 as they brought a week full of activity to a grand climax with their annual "Regal Legal Ball" held at the Concorde Experience. At $75 bds. per ticket however, it was not for the "faint of heart."Beerly Legal held the night before however saw students from across all faculties converge upon Cricket Legends on Fonatabelle, to party the night away. A special touch was added to that Beer lime when top Soca DJ Alvin Toppin took the stage during the set of Technical Soundz and Energy Vybz to report that Machel Montano had made a triumphant return taking "Advantage"of the TT$2 million first prize in the Power Soca Monarch Competition. That event ran concurrently with Beerly Legal albeit several miles away in the "land of the hummingbird" at the Hasley Crawford stadium.

Other events during law week included a sports day on Sunday,a cocktail reception Monday,The Clarke Gittens Farmer Mooting Competition Finals on Tuesday and "The Lord and Lady of Law" pageant on Wednesday.Thursday saw the staging of Law Society's much anticipated annual theatrical production, this year entitled "Faces, and from all indications lived up to all expectations.Don't take our word for it though, as it is expected to be available soon on DVD.
Stay tuned to guildchill to find out when and where you can get your copy.

Law Week 2011 was by all accounts a big success,so a big hail goes out to Law Representative Andrew "Jerky"Wildes and his team.

Who to jump with for carnival?Well up until the big day we shall be highlighting the bands who will be going down "de road" for carnival on our blog.Just remember to contact your chosen band as quickly as possible as spaces are limited.Today we feature the Villager's Int'l.

Villagers Int’l “Cranking in de Village” is one of several bands hitting the road for U.W.I Carnival 2011.Featuring four exciting sections playfully entitled “Wotless,” “Think Pink,” “Dingolay” and “Fireworks.” With a total capacity of 150 across the sections “Cranking in de Village” could be the band to jump with for U.W.I Carnival. But it’s more than just fun and frolic for the community based Villagers Intl from Ashdean Village, Black Rock, which according to one of the bandleaders Jason Bennett, “ is a group formed from friendships on and off campus.” The other bandleader and designer of the band is Ingozi Jackman a dynamic young lady who informs us “Think Pink” is an all female section dedicated to the fight against Breast Cancer. Villagers Int’l members also include Jason Parris (immediate former Guild G.C.C),Courtney Ashby, Gina Dupal, Leandro Downes, Michele Harper and Andrew Emtage.

Registration for the band is only $75.00 and the package includes tops and bottoms for males and females ,free body art and body paint, drinks on the road and an after jump-up meal compliments one of the sponsors Apropos Restaurant. Social Sciences Week

(left)The feature event for So Sci week was "The Overdraft."
Social Sciences Week 2011 started with a splash hosting a beach lime at Batts Rock on Sunday 21st February and ended with a bang on Saturday the 26th with "The Overdraft," a fete held at The Courtyard in Barbados' party central St.Lawrence Gap.The event unfortunately was not as well attended as it could have been as a result of heavy rainfall clashing with the open amphitheatre that is the Courtyard. In between however, the week featured a fun day held on the guild lawn which was enjoyed by the students across the faculties who tackled the massive inflatable slide along with the jumping tent. The Thursday of the week saw students come together for a beer lime in the Student's Union. Thus, social events characterised the week of Social Sciences, kudos to faculty representative Damien"Figgy"Belgrave and his committee.
